[BREW] Pagans And Politics

August/28/2009

brew-purpleThis is not a snarky post.  This is a juicy and joy-filled post bursting with anti-oxidants!

I have been in tomato heaven the last couple of weeks.  The tomato crops seem to be bumper this year, and I’ve been treated to more than my usual share of garden over-production from friends and co-workers.  I’m not complaining — one of my favorite summer light meals is a good old-fashioned tomato sandwich with Miracle Whip (and when I’m being bad, I’ll go for the BLT).

Do you have something small (or several things) that bring you joy just because?

Juicy tomatoes.  The smell of hazelnut coffee I didn’t have to make.  Bubbles.  Puppies and kittens.  The sudden flash of lightning and roll of thunder that means we’re going to have a storm.  Walking into my daughter’s room while she’s asleep and finding her curled up, butt in the air, just like she did when she was a baby (though she’s almost 10 now).  The sight of my closest friends and the realization I don’t have to “try” to be anything around them.  Baby toes.

Share your bliss.

  • OOOHH!! My Bliss!!!….Let’s see………….the smell of leaves burning on a crisp fall morning, the smell of snow in the air just before the first snowfall, and lilacs and honeysuckle. From when I was down in the south-the ritual of boiled peanuts…..OOOOOHHHH!!! I miss boiled peanuts! Fireflies flickering in response to a receding evening thunderstorm. New mown hay, watching the spring babies of lambs, calves, and colts and fillies, playing out in the fields. Laughter-uncontained and spontaneous. Kissing babies in a certain spot under their chin! Fireworks! Fishing!! Campfires with good friends and great music. A fresh cucumber, red onion, and tomatoe sandwich-all home grown and bread fresh -made. Sunrises and sunsets, meteor showers. The smell of the earth just after a thunderstorm. Prisms!!!! Kittens, puppies, chicks! Crisp cold apples, picked off your tree with the dew still on it. The sound of my boots crunching through snow in the winter. The sight of Mt. Shasta, northern lights, The sight of couples who still love each other after all those years….I melt. I could go on and on!

  • Can you see me smiling? Did you KNOW I’d jump on this post like fuzz on a black sweater?

The list is never-ending, but I’ll restrain myself…

    The smell of popcorn
The taste of a fresh, ripe cherry
The feel of the Bear’s arms around me while he sleeps
The sound of my family’s laughter
The sight of a full moon rising over the trees as seen through my kitchen window

What a great question…looking forward to reading the answers!

  • And if I could please…just one more. The smell of books! I love the smell of bookstores, libraries, and craft stores! Oh! and holding my grandbabies and watching as they fall asleep in my arms. The sweet innocence of their inquisitive eyes and smiles.

  • The roar of silence when I am in the mountains. The smell of morning after a thunderstorm the night before with cup of coffee in hand. Changes in the seasons. Baby Smiles. Fresh baked cookies – any kind. The end of a good book. Road trips. A good red wine. Loud Spontaneous Laughter. Live Music and dancing in the street.

  • I like this one. (smile)

    Early mornings
That first rain after a long dry spell.
The smell of my desert after it rains
The smell of sweaty horses and leather
The smell of hay, horse manure, and damp earth together
Watching the sun rise and set
    Baby butts
Kittens and Puppys and baby horses
Watching my horse cross the finish line in front (better than Jose Cuervo and the high lasts longer. ~smile~)
Watching the moon slowly slide up over the horizon
    Watching a hawk circle overhead
    A good enchilada with frijoles
Seeing the first buds of spring pop out on the trees
Watching a full fledged thunderstorm walk into our valley
Seeing my desert in full bloom after a wet spring.
Watching my horses play in a mud puddle after a rain.
Watching any of Mother Earths creatures going about their daily business

Rain in general is one of my favorite things, we get so little of it here that it is always welcome. It makes our desert smile.

  • Funny you should mention….

I’m just getting over being sick for a week and a half and I find myself absolutely craving tomatoes. Fortunately, this is the time of year to get some really luscious ones at the farmer’s market.

  • I love watching the fireflies….
belly laughs from myself or anyone
the smell of a charcoal cookout, or just a fire burning good wood.
    The smell of fresh sheets….
    So many little things…thank goodness!

    • If you ever get the chance to head to the Great Smokey Mountains, try to come see the Firefly Mating at Elkmont National Park. Just Google “Firefly Mating Season” and “Elkmont” together and that should bring it up. Our Coven spends our Summer Solstice here every year watching the firefly magick. It’s gorgeous — tens of thousands of fireflies all blinking synchronously.

  • A strange story about tomatoes… I hated them most of my life. However, I recently quite smoking about 2 years ago and now I cannot seem to get enough. I put them on everything. I never noticed before that they ALL taste different, especially from different parts of the country. My favorite is the creole tomato from New Orleans. I must be needing that vitamin C for healing after quitting.

    • I wonder if there’s a link between tomatoes and nicotine. Something that would make you be in “overload” if you smoked and ate tomatoes at the same time. Of course, tomatoes are part of the nightshade family. Maybe since you decided not to take yourself out with cigarettes (Yay You!!!!), the tomatoes decided you could handle a little nightshade action! :-)

Congrats on quitting smoking and prevailing — that is one of the hardest things anyone can do, and you did it! Wow — what a powerful Witch you are!

  • I just so happen to have a ‘Things I Love List’ I started this year. One day I was driving home and thought of something I love from my childhood. Soon I had an empty envelope full, now 6 months later I have 70 and counting! Talk about keeping your happiness level up! I love to reread these and write them down when the mood strikes. I’ll take out three of my favorites…
1.My Baby, his babies and the love and life lessons they bring my everyday.
2.The gloaming sitting among my flowers. Or the early morning sitting with my flowers and my animals.
3.My Mother, her friendship and her humor; Hell her very essence brings me joy.
    Okay one more,
    4. My dog. She has stood by me through thick and thin. She will not leave my side when I’m hurt and she is so funny!
    What a wonderful idea Sitara!

  • A few things immediately come to mind….the sound of a baby or child’s laughter, the pure ring of joy and innocence just vibrates something deep in your heart and soul….the sound my puppy (she’s almost nine but she’s still my puppy LOL) make when she’s sleeping and dreaming, the cute whimpers and dream barks that just show a beautiful simplicity….and the smile my partner has for me after not seeing each other all day, it’s that feeling of truly coming home. Great topic Sitara!

  • The view atop Blood Mountain as the sun, in a red haze, sets over rolling hills of green fading with distance into deep blue.
The smoke rising from my pipe & curling about the room in a mysterious dance of meandering, complex interweavings & impossible patterns.
The passion of a woman when she is vulnerable & open, and thus beautiful.
The love & eagerness for life I see in the eyes of my children everyday.
My mother as she broods over a cup of coffee with a distance look in her eyes.
The deep satisfaction of knowing that we are all in this together, and we will all come out alive.

    • I hear you there Winter Moon Wolf! It’s not so much the satisfaction but the peace and comfort. I can close my eyes each night and safely know that no matter what; the cycle of life continues as well as all of us. Because energy and love never dies. So take comfort.
