[BREW] Pagans And Politics

August/19/2009

earthly-graceThe Element of Earth is, at once, celebrated and overlooked by many Pagans.  We speak of it with awe.  We campaign to save the Earth.  We call upon its might in our circles.  We honor our connections to the plants and animals that live in harmony with Earth’s cycles.

And many of us still need Earth Sphere tutoring.  What is the coursework of the Earth Sphere?  I’ll tell you.  The areas I’m about to list also apply to the Root Chakra, Muladhara.

Trust.  The ability to provide for one’s self and create security and stability.  Fiscal responsibility.  Self-respect.  Good personal hygiene.  Taking care of one’s physical self through good eating and movement.  Solid sleep habits.  The ability to be still and silent.

These things maintain the Earth Sphere for us as individuals.  Ask yourself how you feel when:

  • You can’t trust anyone and you’re scared.
  • You don’t know how you’ll pay rent or put food on the table.
  • Your bills are behind and the debt collectors are calling/utilities are getting shut off.
  • You don’t like yourself and put yourself last.
  • You don’t get a regular shower or have your hair brushed, etc.
  • You eat junk food and stay glued to the couch.
  • You stay up late online and get up early the next morning.
  • You can’t get a moment of peace and quiet.

Some words you might have used to describe yourself in each of these situations could be:  afraid, sick, stressed, ashamed, gross, slothful, wrung out, unsettled, unstable, shaky, panicked, depressed.  Each of these is a symptom of lack of grounding in some area, of neglect of the Earth Sphere.

Earth is the lowest and most dense element of the four traditional elements.  Like the foundation in a building ensures the integrity of the structure, how well you handle the “basics” of your life provides the foundation for your spiritual study and progress.

If you want the quickest, most sure-fire way to ready yourself for a magickal life, focus on the basics.  You know where you short yourself on working with Earth.  Get your feet on the ground and watch your Witchcraft ascend to new heights — all thanks to your ability to honor the Earth element within your own life.

  • Very good point Sitara! I have ofter thought of the basics as fundamentals to a magickal way of life. How can you advance in spirit if you can’t take care of yourself on the most basic levels?

    • There’s a part of Craft Training that I received and that was pre-requisite for initiation. It was called Feces Coagulation 101 — aka, Getting Your Shit Together. I still require it of students of my own. Job, living on your own, keeping your bills paid, demonstrating solid work ethic and responsibility, taking care of your family (if you have one, are married, or are a parent), among other things. Learning magick without having your basic life in order is like trying to drink water without a cup — everything you could learn is going to have no foundation to hold it so you can benefit. You might be able to get your hands to do the job, but then the water is going to be all over you and make a mess — likewise, not having a good solid foundation before trying to “drink in” the magickal path just means you’re liable to find yourself in a mess, all wet, hung up to dry, wrung out, and so forth.

  • Boy does this speak to me, I’m in quite a process with money which translates to being able to pay the rent, buy food and pay the bills. It sure does feel ungrounded. Clearly in these types of situations we need to take practical actions but I’m wondering if there are certain practices you would recommend to help work with the earth element?
