[BREW] Pagans And Politics

August/15/2009

brew-purpleToday, I’ll be doing some yard saling at the Flea Market.  Last night, I went through the house and gathered up everything that I hadn’t used or thought about in six months that would fit in my car.

I’ve finally reached a point in my life where Stuff feels heavy to me.  I look around and these things may make my life more comfortable, give me beauty, and so forth.  But I really enjoy the process of clearing out the clutter in my closets and passing it along to someone else who sees it as treasure.

In such ways, the belly of the Corporate Beast gets to gnaw a little more and the landfills breathe a sigh of thanks at not being forcefed any more throwaway stuff.

Do you have a cycle of clearing out the unused items in your life?  Nature does it — so should you!

  • I usually tear through everything at least once a year and donate things that I havent used. I do this right around Imbolg. Spring cleaning! But when you are on a farm, you try not to throw away too much. Things always need to be patched, repaire or fixed. Also whenever there is an emergency, such as last year when our neighbors house burnt down, we have enough on hand to make an emergency pack for them. (Spare clothing, blankets, food, sometimes money) Anyone who has adult children, know that those emergency packs, sure come in handy when college kids or young adults find they have more month than money left. One thing I did do for each of my kids, my Hubbs and I gave each one a tent and a sleeping bag. I told them that now they never had to ever worry about being homeless and not have a roof over their head or a bed to sleep in. My daughter at first was really insulted, but now after 10 years, says that was one of the bests gifts ever. But as for me….I’m a pack rat by nature, but not to the point that it bogs me down. When that happens and yes it does occasionally, I purge!

    • True about the kids Millie! My mom gave me the best roast pan, one she had for years when I moved out. From time to time she has given me a blanket or some such too.

  • I started clearing clutter when I turned 25. Before that I was a terrible pack rat (I might NEED this some day!) Now I can’t stand clutter and I really can’t stand it in my work space.

  • Unfortunately I am a saver. I have trouble throwing anything away, from that winter coat from years ago, right down to the smallest scrap of material left over from one of my sewing projects. I do however have to deep clean every once in awhile. There is just not enough room for everything. It’s really hard though, everything I decide to get rid of is something I think I really need to keep.

  • I find myself purging my stepsons clothes on a fairly regular basis. He’s 8 and growing like weed! So, every few months, we make a trip to the local non profit resale shop with a huge bag of clothes. While we’re there we look for new things for him. Most of the children’s clothes are in really good shape because other parents are in the same situation, the kids grow out of things before they wear out or go out of style.

Not that I don’t shop at large retailers, I do. But, why not keep it in the local community when I can?
