You know it is so weird that you have this on your sight. Im the dream that Ive been having on and off this past week something has been whispering in my ear, “Hecate key”. And like I had told you it seemed like everything around me grew darker. I’m really looking forward to making my own key. I really feel like it would help me in this time of inner awareness i seem to be going through at this moment. Thank you, and blessed be. Oh and by the way I love the site. I searched around for a little bit in search of this article, and I love it. The pictures and everything is wonderful. Cant wait to see you and everyone else tomorrow, blessed be.

aw ma!! i think i messed up!!! i went to a crossroads left my key then 2 days later, ny friend asked me if i did it and how did it go? i told her cant talk about it. but then maybe cuz i was so excited , i said but i will say imagine going out in the middle of the night to a crossroads and your digging up dirt and people driving by are like looking at you??? lol. that was pretty much it but right now as i wear my key, im not sure if i broke the spell. i havent felt any difference since having it back. on the way to pick it up i felt the magic feeling of purpose, my selected crossroads was like 15 min away. should i do it again or be patient??? times like these i wish i had a fellow wiccan to turn to.

First of all, let me put your mind to rest on something — getting it “just right” isn’t something you need to worry about unless it’s something you need to worry about. I’m not trying to be droll, here. If you attached a great deal of importance to being EXACT, then you need to get it exact. Your mind needs that prop. If you’re okay with it being non-exact, then don’t worry so much about it. The best way to judge whether or not you’re going to think that way is to imagine that you WEREN’T exact with it… would you immediately doubt yourself?? If the answer is yes, that you would doubt your spellwork, then you need to be exact. The truth is, the Gods answer with an equal amount of attraction and power and belief with which they were called. Some of us need a lot of extra bells and whistles, and some of us don’t. I happen to like them because they require me to “give up” something to make the magick happen — whether it’s my time in researching or simply my time in ordering my life around an important “hour”.

Now, as to figuring true midnight… here’s how. Find out what time the sun sets on the 15th. Find out what time the sun rises on the 16th. Now, count backwards from both sunset and sunrise to the middle hour and minute between them. Easiest way is to take the total number of minutes between sunset and sunrise, divide it by two (halving it), then divide that number up into hours and minutes. Take what you have and add it to the time of sunset, and you’ll have true midnight.

For example, if sunset is 7:15 pm and sunrise is 6:50 am, then there are 11 hours and 35 minutes in the night (695 minutes). Half of that would be approximately 347 minutes. Divided into hours, that is 5 hours and 47 minutes. 5 hours and 47 minutes after 7:15 pm is 1:02 a.m. This is the hour of true midnight in this example.

Use the time of sunset and sunrise for where you live. The Weather Channel online can give this to you very easily. You can also get this information from iPhone programs such as Fourth Day or a regional Farmer’s Almanac.

I hope this helps you figure out true midnight a little easier. It’s a somewhat tricky little calculation, but worth the working. I find that spells work far better at TRUE midnight than the old clock midnight when you’re trying to gauge the timing of things. A little sidenote that you might find interesting — when you calculate true midnight this way, you often end up with midnight as being somewhere in the hour between 12:00am and 1:00am… the 13th hour. The time that is not a time, if you catch my meaning.

never mind lol. you know im anxious to try this ,its obvious i need more aha! moments. tonight ill keep an eye on when the sun sets, and in the morning ill keep an eye on when it rises. i really want to get this right.

im confused about true midnight, i will bury my key on oct 15th 09 but i need help figuring out what true midnight is. is that about 6 pm on the 15th? or is 12am? btw the 15th and 16th?? what if im off when i leave it???

I would say there’s more than a small chance of it being gleaned from Hecate. However, Hecate wasn’t originally Greco-Roman. Her worship is far older, and that she was adopted into the Greek pantheon with all of her traditional rulerships intact would also indicate that she was held in high regard. It’s about time for me to go “key-hunting” at the antique stores again. I tend to collect them and give them away as people need them to pass through their challenges.

By the way, have you seen Paul Borda’s (Dryad Design) cimaruta pentacle charm? It’s GORGEOUS. Gonna have to pony up the money for one of those for myself come Samhaine. Thought I’d point it out if you’ve not seen it.

In Italian witchcraft, keys are considered magical. Particularly old skeleton-type keys, for which you have no lock that opens… or even any idea from whence it came.

Modern Stregheria has a lot of Greek and Roman influence… makes me wonder if Hecate is the connection.
